Swank bungalows and gourmet cuisine put this property on Conde Nast Traveler’s 2004 Gold List.  Creating a 950 acre reserve, much of it primary rain forest inhabited by monkeys and macaws – and donating profits to environmental and humanitarian causes earned it a spot here (506-735-5130, laparios.com).

Lapa Rios Ecolodge in Costa Rica has been named to the 2005 Conde Nast Green List for its exemplary ecotourism efforts.

Conde Nast Traveler selected Lapa Rios as one of “ecotourism’s finest”, paying tribute to the company in its 11 th Annual Green List released last month.

The winners are chosen based on their environmental preservation efforts, their contributions to local culture, and the quality of the guest experience. Lapa Rios is among five lodging destinations to receive the prestigious recognition, its second from Conde Nast.

“Swank bungalows and gourmet cuisine put this property on Conde Nast Traveler’s 2004 Gold List. Creating a 950 acre reserve, much of it primary rain forest inhabited by monkeys and macaws – and donating profits to environmental and humanitarian causes earned it a spot here,” writes Conde Nast.

Established in 1993, the vision of Lapa Rios is “to demonstrate that a standing rain forest is more valuable than one cut down.” The lodge supports this mission by:

  • Protecting and preserving 1,000 acres of primary and secondary rain forest in the Lapa Rios private reserve, in perpetuity.
  • Integrating and assisting the local community through basic education and job training.
  • Maintaining a commitment to sustainable hospitality design and practice.
  • Educating guests about conservation and preservation and about the rain forest and the local culture.
  • Fostering primary education among local children through The Carbonera School Foundation.
  • Creating an intimate experience that emphasizes environmental and intercultural education for guests, employees, and the surrounding community.
  • Utilizing tourism to acquire and protect endangered rain forest.
