LAPA RIOS ECO LODGE STAFF & THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

The owners and managers of Lapa Rios have been committed to the nearby communities for over 20 years. There can be no true nature conservation without taking into consideration the local community and people. At Lapa Rios, we buy local and hire local. We purchase local produce and products to support local producers, commerce, and retail. Whatever we can’t get in the Osa Peninsula is purchased in Costa Rica.

And we hire a local workforce—including top management positions. This is the cornerstone of our commitment to the local community. Lapa Rios salaries are far higher than the national average, and we employ all of our staff year-round, even during low season. We encourage growth for our employees—some members of our staff that started at Lapa Rios cleaning rooms are now in middle management positions or work as nature guides.

Typically the young men and women that apply for entry level positions at Lapa Rios have very limited formal school education and almost no knowledge of the English language. With on-the-job-training and classroom education, the employees you meet will no doubt impress you with their positive attitudes and eager smiles. A staff that is not only helpful, but also genuine. With a great staff, Lapa Rios has been able to achieve a level of guest service that is unusual for such remote destinations.

Many of our former staff members have gone on to become local entrepreneurs in Puerto Jimenez or have made a successful career in hotel management in other areas of Costa Rica. We support local transportation companies for boat, air and ground transfers and allow local dance groups and artisans to perform and sell their crafts at the lodge. A strong support of the local education system complements those efforts and ensures sustainability for future generations.
