The fifth annual Lapathon Jungle Run, organized by Lapa Rios Eco lodge and other businesses in the Osa Peninsula will take place on May 5th, 2013. Due to great demand in the past years, the number of runners will be limited to 300 and the proceeds of the race will go to further restoring and equipping the sports field in Puerto Jimenez. We set ourselves the goal to raise $7,000 (double of what we have raised in previous years).
The 18 km race typically attracts a diverse crowd of locals from Puerto Jimenez, Lapa Rios employees and former Lapa Rios guests that take advantage of promotions at the lodge for those dates. The winners will win stays and dinners at upscale sustainable hotel properties in Costa Rica and Nicaragua that are part of the Cayuga Collection of Sustainable Luxury Hotels and Lodges (www.cayugaonline.com).
This is a race that takes place in the Osa Peninsula in southern Costa Rica close to Corcovado National Park. Departure is from Carbonera School for a run of 18 km to the sports field in downtown Puerto Jimenez. There are five aid stations distributed along this path and we have ensured medical assistance in case necessary. The path winds along the Golfo Dulce coast through secondary growth forest, cattle pastures and reforestation projects.
This social event began in 2009, when for very first time we had a race in the Osa Peninsula and decided to spend the funds generated to help the Red Cross, the only ambulance in La Osa equipping with necessary things, as oxygen, training of medical staff, etc..
Thanks to the successful first year with nearly 100 participants, the second year we decided to open 2 new categories, walkers and kids Lapathon, for a total of 135 participants and over $ 2,000 raised to equip a classroom speech therapy in the public school of Puerto Jimenez.
In 2011 we saw a greater involvement of local companies which selflessly stepped forward and decided to collaborate. Together we reached the sum of $ 2700 that was used for the construction of a new dining room for La Amapola Public School (neighboring community of Puerto Jimenez)
In 2012 we started to collect funds to improve the only area available in Puerto Jimenez for sports, recreation and social events. We will continue with those efforts in 2013 and the idea is to restore and equip the Recreation Field in Puerto Jimenez Downtown, a project that will be supported through various years with the Lapathon race until all improvements can be made.
The participation fee or better call "minimum donation" for the event is ¢5.000 for locals and $20 for participants from abroad. We encourage guests and local participants to make donations as part of their registration fees and have received up to $150 from runners to participate in the race. Registration and donations can be made in the Lapa Rios office in front of the airstrip or directly at Lapa Rios Ecolodge. Money collected will be used to improve sports facilities in our community.
There are male and female categories. Awards will be given for first, second and third place in each category. We also have a mini-race of 3km until Puerto Jimenez, called the Kids Lapathon, where children from 8 until 12 years old can participate. They run at no cost, so all kids encouraged to participate can.
