Lapathon Jungle Run 2011

Race Path

This is a race that takes place in the Osa Peninsula in southern Costa Rica.Departure is from the Carbonera School for a run of 18 km to the soccer field in Puerto Jimenez. We have 5 aid stations distributed along this path, where there is water, something to raise the blood sugar, medical and emergency communication.

Race History

This fundraising event began in 2009, when for very first time we had a race in the Osa Peninsula and decided to spend the funds generated to help the Red Cross and the only ambulance on the Osa Peninsula. We equipped the ambulance and financed training for the red cross staff.

Thanks to this successful first year with nearly 100 participants, the second year we decided to open two new categories: walkers and Kids Lapathon, for a total of 135 participants and over $2,000 raised to equip a classroom for children with learning disabilities in the public school of Puerto Jimenez.

In its last edition in 2011 in which he saw a greater involvement of local business community, we raised the sum of $2700 that were the basis for the construction of a new dining room for La Amapola Public School in a neighboring community of Puerto Jimenez.

The Project We Support This Year

Restoring and equipping the sports field in Puerto Jimenez; sport and recreation opportunity for the Osa Peninsula. We want to make sure that the youth of Puerto Jimenez has a place to gather and share healthy activities. In a community like Puerto Jimenez, where there is “not that much to do” it is very important to create spaces for young people to meet and stay out of trouble.

Registration / Donation

The participation fee or better call "minimum donation" for the event is ¢5.000 for locas and $20 for participants from abroad. Registration and donations can be made in the Lapa Rios office in front of the airport or directly at Lapa Rios Ecolodge. We encourage competitors to make an additional donation, so we can raise sufficient funds to support this project to improve sports facilities in our community.

Lapathon 2011

The third edition of the Lapa Rios organized Lapathon Jungle Run will take place in the Osa Peninsula on May 1st, 2011. Due to great demand, the number of runners will be limited to 300 this year and the proceeds of the race (Registration Fee is $20) will go to support infrastructure needs of local schools. The 18 km race typically attracts a diverse crowd of locals from Puerto Jimenez, former Lapa Rios guests that take advantage of promotions at the lodge for those dates as well as runners from the San Jose Area. The winners will win stays and dinners at upscale sustainable hotel properties in Costa Rica and Nicaragua that are managed by the Lapa Rios management company Cayuga Sustainable Hospitality.

MARIJKE	EDWIN	ADONAY

Marijke is our operations manager and loves to organize with the rest of the team this annual event, the Lapathon. She loves to run, throughout the year, participated in both Lapathons so far and always tries to make it without a stop in less than 2 hours.	Edwin, one of our famous guides, and staff members with the most LR history (almost 16 years!) has also participated during both Lapathons and going for his 3rd this year. He firmly believes in the importance of supporting the local communities and says even if it´s with a walking stick I will keep doing the Lapathon!	Adonay “Tincha” is one of the favorites of Lapa Rios. He´s part of our Housekeeping team and ending in a nice second place during or first Lapathon 2009, he topped this with a FIRST place on the last Lapathon 2010. He will defend his title this year, trying to do the 18km run in less than 65 minutes!
ALONSO	KELLER	CINDY

Alonso has only been part of our team for 3 months, but is wildly enthusiastic about his first Lapathon. He´s part of our kitchen staff and loves to play soccer whenever we have a match with our guests.	Keller will by most of our recent guests been recognized as one of our amazing waiters and guide-in-making. 2010 was his first Lapathon and although it was harder than he thought, he is organizing the “walking group” of the Lapathon, which leaves an hour earlier but equally supports this event by walking all 18 km!	Cindy is the female favorite for Osa. She has ended in the top three during the first 2 Lapathons and has the same goal for this May 1st. She´s our general manager´s, Juan Pinto´s wife and will run this year with their puppy Paco.
JOSEFITA & ZENEIDA	STEPHANIE	ELIECER

These 2 ladies might be recognized by those guests who visit our staff´s kitchen during the Twigs, Pigs and Garbage, our sustainability tour. Josefita and Zeneida love to walk after their hard working hours and having a big heart to help others, will not miss this Lapathon to raise money for the rural school this year.	Stephanie has been with us for about 5 months at front desk, so this will be her first Lapathon, but she loves to run and hopes she will make it in less than 2 hours!	Eliecer is well-known by our guests as one of our star waiters in Brisa Azul. He will also be participating for the 3rd time in our annual event and has been training since January.
GUILLERMO	GABRIEL

Guillermo is one of our youngest team members and part of our knowledgeable team of guides. 2 years in a row he has been finishing in 4th place, and will go for a top 3 position this year!	Gabriel has always been in good shape and represents one more fantastic runner to our most participative team of the waiters.
